Ligier Automobiles was founded by Guy Ligier, a former French Formula One Driver, in Abrest, France. The first Ligier racing car appeared in 1970 in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and since then, Ligier won an enviable palmarés: 50 places at the podium, nine 1st places and a 2nd place at the Formula One World Championship. The last victory was in 1996 at the Monaco Grand Prix. In 2008, the company bought the Microcar division of Beneteau Group. Presently Ligier is the biggest builder of driver license-exempt vehicles and the second largest microcar manufacturer.
