Maxwell

Maxwell-Briscoe Company was founded by Jonathan Dixon Maxwell and Benjamin Briscoe in Tarrytown, New York, in 1903. The first Maxwell car becomes available in 1904. In 1910 the company merged with another one becoming United States Motor Company. This merger was not successful and Jonathan Maxwell pursued the car building industry with a company of its own, the Maxwell Motor Company. Maxwell built sports cars that gained the company a good reputation. A Maxwell set a coast-to-coast (New Jersey-California) speed record in 1916. The company was bought by Walter P. Chrysler in the early 1920’s. In 1925 the brand name was dropped, being changed first to Chrysler Four and later to Chrysler Plymouth and finally just Plymouth. The Plymouth was also dropped in 2001.
