History, Development and General Characteristics

The F1 Mclaren is a supercar, with the most expensive production, many say. Everything is super in this car: the top speed, the driving experience and the design. The top speed of the F1 was record breaking for a production car when it was debuted. Reaching 386.7 km/h, the F1 remained until 2009 as the fastest production car, only being topped by cars with turbocharged engine. This still makes it the fastest natural aspirated production car.
The powerful engine took the Mclaren F1 to the first place at Le Mans when the car was debuted in 1995.

The concept of the F1 was to “to build the finest driver's car ever built, or ever likely to be built”. The F1 was first unveiled in 1991 at The Sporting Club in Monaco. Production started in 1992 and ended in 1998. Of this rare model, only 106 units were made.

Engine and Transmission

The F1 features a BMW S70/2 engine that was specially built for this car. The 6.1 litre V12 has 627 horsepower. The transmission is 6 speed transaxle. The F1 goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds.

The F1 engine is naturally aspirated, since turbochargers and superchargers, although giving more power, also decrease the driver's control of the engine.

Body and Design

Designed and manufactured by Gordon Murray, the F1 has a streamline structure and it is very light weighted. It has three sets, one more than most of its competitors with a central driving position on front to allow better visibility. The doors are butterfly type, opening up and out.

The F1 was the first production road car to have an all carbon composite monocoque and body structure. Because this choice of materials, the overheating was a problem and a good insulator was needed. Murray came up with an expensive but very efficient idea: the engine bay was lined gold foil. Each F1 has in average 25 gr of gold. Its expensive materials boost the price to the public.

McLaren

The passion for the sport, led the New Zealander Bruce Mclaren to start his own race team in 1963. He started with a heavily modified Cooper Zerex, that turn out to be the first Mclaren sports car. Until 1989, the Mclaren was focused on racing, but in that year the Mclaren Automotives was founded. The main goal was to incorporate all the racing technology, mainly Formula 1 developments, into road cars. The first car, a very well received sports car, classified by the critics as a sup...  more
