Metropolitan was an economy, subcompact car, conceived by Nash Motor Corporation for sale in the USA. For reasons related with engineering experience, Nash decided to contract the manufacture to Austin Motor Company in the U.K. The first Metropolitans were sold in 1953. In 1954 Nash merged with Hudson to form the American Motors Corporation and the Metropolitans were called Nash Mets or Hudson Mets depending on the dealer selling them. Only later they appeared in the market as a standalone brand. In the beginning Mets were exclusively marketed in the USA but in 1957 Austin got permission to sell them in the U.K. and overseas. A short drop in sales led to the end of production in 1961, the last cars in stock being sold in 1962. There is still a good number of metropolitans on the road in the U.S.A., but they are rarely seen in the U.K.
