The first company to bear the Mitsubishi tradename was a shipping firm, which Yataro Iwasaki had opened in 1870. In time, Mitsubishi became also a brand for ship manufacturing, banking, insurance, trading and warehouse business, to which was later joined paper, glass and steel production, aircraft and other business sectors. Eventually, Mitsubishi turned to automobile production as well, starting in 1917 with the introduction of the Model A. This car was also the first Japanese production automobile.
Today, the company markets its models on a global scale. Mitsubishi has currently turned towards investments in green cars and in 2010 introduced its first all-electric production car.
