The racing season is heating up. We are a mere two weeks away from the first events on the WEC and Formula 1 calendar. Fans of German touring car racing have a little longer to wait as the first event of the DTM series for the 2012 season does not begin until April 29. Regardless, Audi has revealed its new A5 DTM car.
Audi claims that it waited so long to reveal the new car because it is taking its defense of the series title seriously. The paperwork revealing the new car had to be submitted to DTM's governing body, and there was no reason to keep it a secret anymore.
The governing body has mandated more parts sharing among the competitors and forced stricter aerodynamics for the new cars as well.
In terms of style, the new A5 DTM has a one-piece radiator grill, LED running lights and aerodynamic aids along the flanks.
"More than ever before, even the minutest detail will count this year in the DTM. Obviously, you want to keep the things you’ve worked out over the past few months under wraps for as long as possible," said Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich Head of Audi Motorsport.
All of the DTM cars will be based on coupes this year with the BMW M3, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe and this A5, although that is semantic at best since the DTM cars are silouhettes anyway.
