Since May, when Google became the first organization in history to license an autonomous car for the road, Nevada has become a hot bed for developing autonomous vehicles. Nevada became the first state to open its vehicle registration to allow for autonomous vehicles and automakers like ToyotaToyotaToyotaJapan, 1937 > present155 models

. Toyota's vehicle uses 360-degree laser detection and ranging, three high definition cameras, front and side radar, GPS and several accelerometers.

Toyota is not saying when this technology will be ready, but it is a sign of progress that this technology is in real world testing, even in a limited capacity.

Toyota is also developing vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication in Japan for its vehicles that should make its vehicles even safer.

Audi

Audi received the first registration for an automaker and the second registration in general for an autonomous vehicle in Nevada for its Audi TTSTTS Coupé DSGAudi TTS Coupé DSGGermany, 2008 > present4 photos
. Audi also highlighted the vehicle during its CES presentation.

Audi defines autonomous driving as a pilot would autopilot. The car can take control for mundane tasks, but the driver can intervene at any time.

Audi tested the autonomous TTS at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in Colorado earlier this year to see if it could drive up the course by itself. It did so in 27 minutes, which is about 17 minutes slower than the current record.
