After two generations that sold 330,000 units across China since 1999, Buick has unveiled the all-new GL8 luxury MPV. The new multi-purpose vehicle continues to build on the heritage of the original GL8, which was China’s first family of executive wagons.
Reaching the market in January 2011, the all-new GL8 features seven innovations and 27 technological breakthroughs. It also suffered improvements in terms of design, space and safety, technology, power features and quality.
According to Terry Johnsson, Shanghai GM Vice President of Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing, the new GL8 “offers everything that consumers have come to expect from Buick, including a dynamic, smooth, quiet and comfortable ride. Like its predecessor, the new GL8 is the right product at the right time.” Developed by Shanghai GM in cooperation with the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) in Shanghai, the new GL8 focus on the specific needs of Chinese customers.
In terms of exterior design the new GL8 is highlighted by Buick’s distinctive double sweep spear running from front to back. It features decorative metal bands, which hand a more smooth and modern elegance. Buick’s design cues can be found on the classic waterfall grille and chrome portholes.
One of the most important features of the new GL8 is its spacious room. The vehicle is 5,256 mm long, 1,878 mm wide, 1,800 mm high and has a wheelbase of 3,088 mm. It features ice-blue atmosphere lighting and a 360-degree wraparound design inspired by luxury yachts.
To ensure a smooth, steady ride the GL8 has received an enhanced suspension with independent front-and-back sub-frames. Thanks to Buick’s signature QuietTuningthe interior noise is reduced, blocked and absorbed, for a distraction-free environment that is comparable to that of a luxury sedan.
The new GL8 will be available with a choice between a 3.0-liter V-6 SIDI intelligent direct injection engine and a 2.4-liter Ecotec engine with segment-leading fuel efficiency. Both engines will be fitted with GM’s advanced 6-speed automatic transmission as standard.
