have all offered CNG bi-fuel versions in their pick-up trucks, but the Impala will be the first car to offer bi-fuel as an option. GM says that it will be offered to retail customers and to fleet buyers.
It will use a 3.6-liter V6 that has been modified to run of gasoline or CNG. When running on gasoline, it will have the full 305hp and 264lb-ft that the engine usually offers, and when running on CNG, power will be cut by 20%. An eight-gallon CNG tank will be mounted in to Impala's trunk, and GM expects that that CNG-only range will be around 150 miles. The price premium over the standard Impala will be similar to the $7,500 to $10,000 that GM charges for bi-fuel trucks.
Standard features will include ten air bags, infotainment system with Bluetooth and color LED instrument display.
Compressed natural gas offers lower costs and emissions compared to gasoline, but fuel economy will be somewhat lower.
The bi-fuel Impala will go on sale in the summer of 2014.
