Holden Restores 1969 Hurricane - It's First Concept Car

Holden is General Motor's Australian subsidiary, but it is also much more than that. Throughout its history, it has made totally separate vehicles that were sold by GM anywhere else in the world. In 1969 it produced its first concept car- the Hurricane. 

The Hurricane is a mid-engined, rear-wheel drive car whose styling looks somewhere between an early Can-Am car and Speed Racer. In features that would have been revolutionary for the time, it had automatic climate control and a digital instrument panel. It also echoed many contemporary cars by having a rear-facing camera that was connected to a closed-circuit television in the cabin. 

The Hurricane was powered by a 4.2 liter V8 that Holden introduced in its production cars in 1969. It produced 262hp.

The car is 990mm high and does not have doors. Instead the roof and windshield slide forward to allow ingress. 

Paul Clarke, Holden’s manager for Creative Hard Modeling, and a group of volunteers are responsible for restoring the Hurricane. 

The Hurricane will be on display at the Motorclassica at the Melbourne Royal Exhibition Building on October 21-23.
