Porsche unveiled the new 718 Cayman at the Beijing Motor Show, which in a similar way to what happened to the
718 Boxster is a renamed version of the second generation Cayman. In addition to a new name the Cayman gets a new four-cylinder engine and a renewed design.
Thanks to the new four-cylinder supercharged engine, which also equips the 718 Boxster, the coupé and roadster 718 models have for the first time the same output. The entry version
718 Cayman delivers 300hp from the two-liter block.The
S version can extract 350hp from the 2.5-liter block. This represents a 25hp power increase when compared to its predecessor. The 718 Cayman with PDK and the optional Sport Chrono Package accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 4.7 seconds, while the 718 Cayman S completes the same exercise in 4.2 seconds. The maximum speed of the 718 Cayman is 275km/h while the 718 Cayman S can reach 285km/h.
Due to the higher dynamic capabilities of the new Cayman 718, braking systems have been improved with 330mm disc brakes at the front and 299mm rear discs. The 718 Cayman now has the braking system that has been used in the Cayman S. The 718 Cayman S now uses four-piston calipers from the
911 Carrera combined with six millimeters thicker disk brakes.
New more muscular design
The new 718 Cayman gets more prominent air intakes at the front and on the sides and also a lower profile that highlights its dynamic characteristics. On the front of ultrathin headlights above the air intakes now include the sidelights and direction indicators, with bi-xenon technology and LED daytime running lights. The profile of the new 718 Cayman reveals the hollow doors and pronounced sills. With a strip in high-gloss black with the Porsche logo between the rear lights the new rear looks much wider than before. The taillights have been completely redesigned and are distinguished by the three-dimensional technology and the four-point brake which seem to float.
The interior of the 718 Cayman was also renovated, like the 718 Boxster. Among the new features are the upper section of the dashboard, including new ventilation outlets , new sports steering wheel inspired by the 918 Spyder design as well as new connectivity options and the Porsche Communication Management (PCM), which is now fitted as standard. Among the options are the Connect module which includes special options for smartphones, such as USB, Apple CarPlay and the Porsche Car Connect. Another option available is the module navigation system with voice control which makes it easier to introduce the address for the destination. If the Connect Plus module is selected, this system can include traffic information in real time.
The 718 Cayman and 718 Cayman S are now available for order. The launch in the European market starts on the 24th of September 2016.
