Porsche Factory Drivers at 6 Hours of Spa 2012

The Felbermeyer-Proton Porsche was second in class at the 12 Hours of Sebring

Porsche is in a very weird spot at the moment in sports car racing. While the brand is still certainly participating, it appears that all of its time, money and effort is going into the 2014 Le Mans effort and next 911 GT3. The best example of this is this year's 6 Hours of Spa. It is a premiere sports car race and the second race in the World Endurance Challenge, but Porsche has just three cars in the race and two factory drivers participating.

The Team Felbermeyer-Proton Porsche 911 GT3 RSR is the de facto factory Porsche entered into the race because it is being driven by Porsche works drivers Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz. It is also the only Porsche entered into the GTE-Pro class. The Felbermeyer-Proton car came in second in class at the 12 Hours of Sebring.

Lieb has won in his class in a Porsche in 2005 and 2007 at Spa and had an overall win in 2003. He and Lietz won at Spa driving together in 2009 and 2010.

“I’m looking forward to contesting the new World Endurance Championship in Spa. Aside from the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, the Spa circuit is my absolute favorite. The track is flowing and very challenging, not to mention the fantastic corners. It’s simply great fun to drive the 911 GT3 RSR there. We made a great start to the season in Sebring and now we want to continue in the same vein. I’m feeling very confident that we’ll manage it,” said Lieb.

There are two other 911 GT3 RSRs entered in the GTE-Am class. Joël Camathias, Markus Palttala and Paul Daniels are driving the JWA-AVILA team car, and Christian Ried, Gianluca Roda and Paolo Ruberti are driving Team Felbermeyer-Proton car in the class. Roda and Ruberti won the GTE Am class at the 12 Hours of Sebring, and Roda is a former Porsche Cup winner.

The Team Felbermeyer-Proton is in second place in the GTE-Pro WEC standings with 18 points, and it is in first in the GTE-Am class with 25 points.

The 6 Hours of Spa is on Saturday, May 5, from 2:30pm to 8:30pm local time. It will be broadcast on Eurosport 2. There are a total of 42 entries in this year's race including the first race for the Audi R18 E-Tron Quattro and R18 Ultra.
