late in the Canadian Grand Prix. Gutierrez crashed into the wall immediately after leaving the pits in the final portion of the race on Sunday.

A mobile crane was carrying the car away when the marshal dropped his radio. He stumbled when trying to pick up the radio and fell in the path of the crane. The driver of the crane could not see the marshal and accidentally ran him over.

The worker was first treated trackside and then transported via helicopter to a local hospital. He died from his injuries at the hospital.

Canada's CTV television network reports that medical crews were on scene within 30 seconds of the accident. He was walking with the car to stabilize it when he dropped his radio.

Neither the FIA nor local media have revealed the marshal’s identity. He was in his late 30s and had volunteered as a worker during the race four about the last 10 years.

The man is the third track worker to be killed in Formula 1 since 2000. At the 2001 Australian Grand Prix, debris from Jacques Villeneuve's car killed a marshal. At the 2000 Italian Grand Prix, a loose wheel from a multi-car crash killed a track worker.

Both Sauber and Gutierrez have responded to the fatality via twitter.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the marshal who sadly passed away and we would like to offer our sincere condolences," tweeted Sauber.

"My dearest condolences to the family of the marshal who lost his life today, our prayers for him & his family. RIP," tweeted Gutierrez.
