Launched in 2000 in the North American market the Xterra is a compact SUV built by Japanese automaker Nissan.

Based on Nissan's F-Alpha truck platform the Xterra is targeted at an adventurous consumer and is named after the XTERRA off-road triathlon race series, which was sponsored by Nissan until the end of 2006.

When it was introduced in North America, the Xterra was marketed as a simple but capable SUV with the slogan Everything you need, nothing you don't.

The Xterra is currently in its second generation, which debuted in 2005.
