History and Development

In 1974, the German automaker introduced a brand new turbocharged sports car at the Paris Motor Show, the Porsche 911 Turbo – the first production turbocharged model of the 911 lineup. In the North American automobile market, it was sold under the name Porsche 930, unlike the European Porsche 911 Turbo.

Engine and Transmission

In its earliest production years, the 911 Turbo was powered by a turbocharged 3.0L (2993cc) engine, which was longitudinally mounted on the car’s rear. At a power output of 260hp, the rear-wheel drive car reached the 153 mi/h (246 km/h). From 1978 onwards, a 3.3L engine replaced the preceding one and boosted power output to 300 hp. The 911 Turbo was driven by a 4-speed manual gearbox, until 1989 when it was replaced by a 5-speed one.

Body and Design

In a unit steel frame, the 911 Turbo body includes wider tires, therefore wider wheel-arches were also required in order to accommodate them. A bigger rear spoiler was also added, joining the list of this model’s distinguishing items.

911

The 911 model is none other than a 2-door sports car produced by Porsche AG. Just like a typical Porsche model, it is built in a slightly arched frame, even through the large number of modifications it has experienced along its many years of existence. It has also been made in Cabriolet and Targa versions. Larger and clearly more sophisticated than Porsche’s previous models, the rear-engined 911 was said to be the main opponent to the Jaguar E Type,...  more
