Porsche Cayman R
It will go on sale in February 2011, priced from £51,731 – around £5k more than the Porsche Cayman 3.4 S, but less than the Lotus Evora S, which is expected to go on sale soon for £58,995.
Acceleration from 0-62mph takes five seconds in the manual Cayman R (two-tenths quicker than the Cayman S), and reduces to 4.7 seconds in models equipped with Porsche’s Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) semi-automatic gearbox which allows gear changes through steering wheel mounted paddles.
Top speed is up by 3mph to 175mph thanks to an increase in power to 330bhp, an additional 10bhp.
Performance and handling benefit from a strict weight-saving regime, which has lopped 55kg from the Cayman’s overall mass. It now weighs 1,295kg, roughly the same as a diesel Vauxhall Corsa.
Equipment has been stripped back, with the removal of air-con and a stereo in particular making the Cayman R a purists’ choice. The fuel tank has been made slightly smaller, lightweight door components from the Porsche 911 GT3 RS have been fitted and there are lightweight carbon fibre sports seats.
The 19-inch alloy wheels first seen on the Porsche Boxster Spyder are fitted and the suspension has been lowered by 20mm to improve handling.
Porsche’s Cayman Aerokit exterior trim is fitted, with a fixed rear spoiler, black-framed halogen headlights, black door mirrors and “PORSCHE” side-stripes differentiating the Cayman R.
UK customers who buy a Cayman R will also be treated to a Driving Experience Programme at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone.
