The Renault Scénic was first known to the automotive world as Mégane Scénic. At that time the compact MPV was mechanically identical to the Mégane hatchback. The 1.4 L, 1.6 L "Energy", 1.8 L "F-type" petrol and 1.9 L diesel engines were shared with the hatchback range.
Having underestimated the success of the Scénic, Renault saw the production increase from the expected 450 units a day to almost 2500 a day. On the year of its launch, the Scénic was elected 1997 European Car of the Year.
The Scénic also counts with a longer wheelbases version: the Grand Scénic. The larger version also features a longer rear overhang and two small child-sized seats in the enlarged luggage area.
