The Rinspeed microMAX has been designed in conjunction with multimedia system maker Harman and uses connected computing to make driving easier and potentially safer. Each car uses a cloud-based connection that allows all of the vehicles to share navigation and traffic information. If the system detects changes in traffic in one part of town, it can automatically direct the connected vehicles in the area around the problem.
“We have developed an intelligent and eco-friendly mobility concept complete with its own vehicle that combines the benefits of personal transportation with those of taxis, car-sharing services and carpool concepts as well as those offered by public transit. It uses the powerful UMTS and LTE data networks in urban centers and operates in real time,” said Rinspeed founder Frank Rinderknect.
There is not reason that the technology could not be incorporated into nearly any vehicle to create a series of networked cars that know where the others are.
Harman developed an app that would allow commuters to look for transport in their area. The app looks at routes, destinations, driving speed and vehicle occupancy for each connected vehicle, it finds the best ride opportunities for the commuter and directs the vehicle to them.
The vehicle itself that Rinspeed will show is a very boxy, small bus. It is only 3.7m long and 2.2m high and is essentially a rectangle on wheels. There is enough space for three passengers standing up, plus an unfolded stroller. For safety, there are special standing safety belts. It also has a coffee maker and refrigerator inside.
Power comes from an electric motor with a synthetic engine sound for safety.
