Companhia Industrial Santa Matilde was founded in Petrópolis, Brazil, in 1916, to produce rail components and agricultural machinery. Following the restrictions imposed by the Brazilian Government to car and spare parts imports, the president of Cia Industrial Santa Matilde, Humberto Pimentel Duarte, decided to embark on the production of a top quality, home designed sports car. The first prototype, designed by his daughter, Ana Lídia, was shown at São Paulo Motor Show in 1976. Santa Matilda’s design was unique in the sense that it had not been based on any other car. Santa Matilda was among the most luxurious Brazilian cars. Production ceased in 1997.
