Scania-Vabis history goes back to 1907 when Peter Petersson, works manager steel company Surahammars Bruk, a steel company, convinces the company to extend its activities to carriage-production. The new company, Vagnfabriksaktiebolaget, with premises in Södertälje, near Stockholm, Sweden, started the production of engines and automobiles. The commercial vehicles were not well received in the market and the mother company decided to sell Vagnfabriks Aktiebolaget and in 1911 Vagnsfabriks Aktiebolaget (VABIS) merged with Maskinfabriks AB Scania which was based at Malmö.The new company was named Scania-Vabis.In 1919 Scania decided to abandon bus and car bulding, focusing on truck manufacture which nearly led the company to bankruptcy. In 1969, a new merger this time with SAAB, formed Saab-Scania AB. In 1995 the company was split and the bus and truck division’s name changed to Scania AB. Nowadays Scania produces only buses and heavy trucks.
