SAIC Motor Corporation Ltd, based in in Shanghai, China, has its roots in Shanghai Automotive Company Ltd and Shanghai Automobile Assembling Factory which was founded in September 1958, to produced automobiles. The first car was called Phoenix, the name being changed to Shanghai in 1964. Saic produces passenger and mini-vehicles and besides its own brands, the company has joint-ventures with Volkswagen and general Motors.
