Singer Car Company was founded by George Singer in Coventry, England, in 1875, to produce bicycles. In 1905 the company built its first car, under license from Lea Francis. In 1912 Singer built the Ten which is considered to be the first real light car in the world. Singer produced a large range of high quality, high endurance passenger and sports cars and had a lot of success until the Great Depression of the 1930’s when it started experiencing financial problems. In 1936 Singer had closed some of its factories and was reorganized as Singer Motors Ltd. By the end of 1955 the Company was sold to the Rootes Group that maintained the brand but in 1967 the Rootes Group was taken over by Chrysler and the Singer brand was discontinued in 1970. This company has no relation with Singer Motor Company Inc. of Mount Vernon, USA.
