The 2012 Rapid is the first model that features the new Škoda brand design. It is clean and modern with flat surfaces and deep lines. A new chrome grille and a rounded hood that arches over the car's nose shape complete the front view.

The Rapid is based on the concept MissionL that Škoda presented in 2011 at the IAA in Frankfurt. It is based on the same extended Polo platform as the Volkswagen Vento that is sold in India. According to Skoda the Rapid sits between the Fabia and Octavia in the brand's lineup.

Skoda will show the production version at the Paris Motor Show in late September and sales start later in the fall of 2012.

Rapid Spaceback

The Spaceback is aimed at young buyers looking for a compact, five-door hatchback but who do not want a full wagon. It rides on the same 2.602m wheelbase as the standard car, but overall length is 18cm less. The only major change comes at the rear where an extra pillar was added to support the longer roof. From the B-pillar forward, the two versions are identical.

The Spaceback is available with four petrol and two diesel engines at launch. At launch, the 89hp 1.6 TDI is only available in the Rapid range in the Spaceback. The most efficient GreenLine version uses 3.8l/100km and emits 99g/km of CO2.

Skoda offers an optional panoramic, tinted glass sunroof that goes from the windshield to the rear window. The option will also extend the rear window 10cm further down the body and includes a black rear spoiler.

Inside, the Skoda Rapid Spaceback has the same legroom and headroom as the standard car, but rear cargo space was reduced 135 liters over the standard Rapid to 415 liters.

Interior options include a double cargo floor that splits the truck into two levels.

Skoda

The origin of Skoda Auto goes back to 1895. Václav Laurin, a mechanic, and Václav Klement, book-seller, both shared a passion for bicycles. When Klement tried to get spare parts to fix is bicycle and wrote to the manufacturer in Czech, he got an unfawl reply asking him to write in a language they could understand. In that moment, the two Czechs founded Laurin & Klement and started to produce bicycles under the patriotic name: Slavia.
