coupes originally built. Mercedes Motorsport boss Rudolf Uhlenhaut commissioned two 300SLR coupes to be built from the nine existing 300 SLR chassis. The cars were just being built during the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans when one of the SLRs was destroyed in a fatal accident that killed 83 spectators, one driver and injured 120 other people.

Uhlenhaut had the coupes' production continue after the race, but Mercedes eventually decided to withdraw from factory racing in 1956. By this time, the gullwing coupe was complete but had nowhere to race. Uhlenhaut bought one of the two cars and used it has is personal car for the next several years with the only change being an extra silencer for the exhaust. 

Mercedes' other star of the show will be a racecar built the 1910 Prince Heinrich Tour. It will be on display with another of Prince Heinrich's Mercedes that was just restored by Louwman Museum in the Netherlands. It will be the first time that either car has been on public display in decades.
