head of marketing, says that the i8 has already fulfilled its first year sales predictions based on preorders alone. Sales of the i8 will not begin until mid-2014, and Robertson did not reveal the precise preorder numbers

The i8 combines the electric powertrain from the i3i3BMW i3Germany, 2014 > present with a 1.5-liter petrol engine to get to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds and an estimated 94mpg US (2.5l/100km), while being wrapped in a carbon fiber reinforced plastic body.

"We are delighted with the interest in the car, which will stand at the heart of what BMW is about - performance and sustainability," said Robertson.

The i3 waiting list is somewhat shorter with German dealers reporting a one-month waiting list for the electric version and no waiting list for the range-extended model. However, Robertson that the list is growing as more people are able to test drive them. Around 10,000 i3s have been preordered. Sales of the i3 will begin in the first quarter of 2014.
