at its factory in White Marsh, Maryland. It is the first time for its electric cars where the motor and drive units will also be built in the US.

“The era of using electricity to help improve performance and fuel economy is already here and the trend is only going to grow. Today is further proof GM is leading in the development of electric vehicles that will improve America’s energy security,” said Mike Robinson, GM vice president of Sustainability.

The Spark EV produces 130hp and 400lb-ft of torque and will accelerate to 60mph in eight seconds. The car will debut in California and Oregon later this year, then be introduced to Canada and finally in Europe and South Korea.

The electric motors are made at the White Marsh factory where the vehicles are assembled.

By designing electric motors in Michigan and manufacturing them at Baltimore Operations, GM controls the design, materials and production processes, as well as reducing costs and improving performance, quality, reliability and manufacturability," said White Marsh factory manager Bill Tiger.
