"On the S-Class Coupé as the traditional top of our product range the designers take advantage of their additional freedom and thus create an automotive masterpiece," said Joachim Schmidt, head of Mercedes sales and marketing.

The design itself is an elongated, smoothed version of the current CL-Class. The hood is long and low with a flat grill and large, central Mercedes star. The headlights are elliptical. The roof is nothing more than a brief arc that pops up over the windshield and hits the rear quickly. The doors and side get wider to the rear for extended fenders. The roof is mostly a glass panel separated by supports for the windshield and rear glass.

The rear of the concept is quite simple with wraparound taillights and connected with a chrome strip. Lower down, the exhaust floats in a polished chrome diffuser. It almost looks like jewelry.

The interior exudes high class. The digital instrument panel is white and is curved. The seats are covered in fluted, white leather with blue LED accents outlining the lines of the interior. Mercedes says that a new, smaller air bag design is giving them more freedom on how the interior can be styled. It has the same 12.3in screens from the current S-Class for the instruments and infotainment system.

"The Concept S‑Class Coupé combines tradition and emotion, and is a symbol for the embodiment of our design style of sensual clarity. The perfected design with self-assured style and the highly exclusive appointments make the coupé a true design icon and an expression of modern luxury,” said Gorden Wagener, said Daimler’s head of design.

He says that the concept was for the coupe to be smooth and clear. It is meant to evoke Mercedes tradition but still be progressive.

The concept uses a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8 with 449hp (455ps) and 516lb-ft of torque (700Nm).

A new S-Class coupe will be on the road eventually, and the concept is meant to echo that car.
