2012 Saab 9-5 SportCombi premiering in Geneva

Wagons aren’t as popular in the States as they are in Europe and it’s hard to see why when terrific, stylish wagons like the new 9-5 SportCombi are available.

“Born from Jets” is the Saab advert tagline on this side of the pond and it’s clear to see Saab has taken seriously the jet canopy design concept.  The warp-around glass at the rear gives the new 9-5 a look that’s airy, modern and dynamic. Additionally, the new 19” alloys suggest jet turbine blades.

The 9-5 SportCombi is about the same size as the 9-5 sedan but offers 18.6 cubic feet (527 liters) of storage, seats up, and 56 cubic feet (1600 liters) with the rear seats folded.

Engines for the US have not been announced but in Europe 9-5 line-up is all turbo. Saab will offer updated versions of the 1.6 & 2.0-liter turbo gas (petrol) engines as well as a 2.0-liter TTiD turbo-diesel. A V6 option is probable, especially for North American markets. Saab’s XWD all-wheel drive system will be optional as well.

Models and pricing will be announced on March 3rd during the debut at the Geneva Motor Show. However, a base, premium and Aero trim levels are likely. Don’t hold your breath for Viggen.  Expect a slight price bump from the current $38K (US) to start.
