has officially debuted the concept for the seventh generation GTI after the images of the car leaked yesterday. The biggest news about the car is that it will come standard with 220ps and 350Nm, and Volkswagen will offer a power pack option that adds 10ps more to the car. It will be on sale in Europe in early 2013 and UK buyers will have to wait until the summer.

, but instead a returned version of the EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged engine from the current GTI. VW has been able to tune it to produce 220ps, which is 10ps more than it currently has. VW is also offering a power pack that boosts power further to 230ps. The EA888 also gets a 70Nm torque boost to 350Nm total. VW says that the 220ps version accelerates to 100km/h in 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 153mph. The performance pack takes 6.5 seconds with a top speed of 155mph. Both versions come with stop/start and get 47.1mpg UK (39.22mpg or 6.0l/100km) and emit 140g/km of CO2 with the six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed DSG will also be optional.

The power pack also adds larger front disc brakes and a front axle differential lock that will reduce understeer.

While calls the car a concept, expect the production version of the new GTI to look a lot like this car next year.

The new design incorporates important style elements from the GTI like the red line across the grill with the more angular style of the new Golf. The concept gets a rear spoiler, subtle rear diffuser and deeper front bumper. The interior is done in the classic GTI plaid. The interior also gets a flat-bottomed steering wheel, golf ball shift knob and red ambiance lighting.
