The design was joined by engineering solutions that result in a dynamic profile, in addition to a focus on maximizing interior space and an optional 5+2 seating configuration.

To be able to provide the 5+2 seats configuration the Discovery Sport introduces for the first time, a number of innovations in the compact premium SUV segment. Thanks to all-new multi-link rear axle the vehicle provides engaging driving dynamics but it also provides ample and flexible cabin space behind the second row.

"Not only does Discovery Sport mark the introduction of the first new member of our expanding Discovery family, it also brings the versatility of 5+2 seating to the compact premium SUV market," said Phil Popham, Jaguar Land Rover Group Marketing Director. "Discovery Sport's versatility is a key differentiator. It is quite simply the most accomplished vehicle in its segment."

Design

The design of the new Discovery Sport is heavily inspired on the Discovery VisionLand Rover Discovery Visi...United Kingdom, 2014 > 2014, concept unveiled in April at the New York Motor Show. Despite being 80 mm longer and a little lower than the Freelander, the Discovery Sport continues to seem compact, but less vertical and boxy.

"Our challenge was to combine a premium design with exceptional versatility," said Gerry McGovern, Design Director and Chief Creative Officer of Land Rover. "The dynamic design of the Discovery Sport will create an emotional connection with consumers, and this vehicle is more versatile than any other compact premium SUV."

McGovern says that he is especially proud of the dynamic shape of the Discovery Sport, with the connection of the front and rear windshields with the bonnet, a rising beltline, a gently descending rooflineand a carefully developed rear spoiler that cuts drag and is also able to keep the rear screen clean in murky weather.

The shape of the Discovery Sport was aerodynamically optimized. The front area was carefully controlled and the drag coefficient of 0.36 was optimized through computer techniques and tests in the wind tunnel.

Inside the model, Land Rover focused on making life easier for its occupants. The brand has used high quality materials and a vertical center console, with versatility in several details. The cabin includes storage solutions and has up to six USB ports, allowing multiple simultaneous charging of electronic devices.

The new Discovery Sport also includes a Head Up Display, an advanced infotainment system with a 8" touch screen and the ability to tilt and slide the second-row seats, which maximizes interior versatility.

Advanced technology

One new feature of the Discovery Sport is the introduction of an advanced multi-link long-travel suspension, the innovative rear axle also ensures the Discovery Sport is comfortable, refined and rewarding to drive on-road, while retaining the all-terrain capability for which Land Rover is world-renowned

Like all new Land Rover, security was also on focus while developing the new Discovery Sport. The vehicle received some innovations like the new pedestrian airbag, unique in its segment, the Autonomous Intelligent Braking System standard on all trims and a state-of-the-art bodyshell featuring both ultra-high-strength steel and lightweight aluminium.

Engines

At launch the new Discovery Sport will be available with a range of four-cylinder turbodiesel engines. All include Stop-Start technology, a system of high pressure direct injection, low friction internal components and smart regenerative charging allowing for exceptional performance and savings.

In 2015, a high efficient eD4 turbo diesel engine with CO2 emissions of just 119 g/km will join the optimized four-cylinder diesel engines. Regarding transmissions the Discovery Sport provides an automatic nine speed and six-speed manual, in addition to all-wheel drive or two-wheel option.
 
The Discovery Sport will be officially unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October and will arrive on the market in early 2015.
