SARTE program allowed trains of vehicles traveling close together at up to 90km/h. This technology will see it first availability to consumer vehicles in 2014 when Volvo offers automatic vehicle following at up to 50km/h. Volvo calls the technology Traffic Jam Assistance

The system is integrated into the adaptive cruise control system and lane keeping aid that are both already available on the V40V40 (modern) Gen.1Volvo V40 (modern) Gen.1Sweden, 2013 > present214 versions

. The driver activates the Traffic Jam Assistance system by pressing a button, and the car takes over control of the gas, brakes and steering. The driver sets a desired gap at the front, and the car keeps that distance. 

"This technology makes driving more relaxed in the kind of monotonous queuing that is a less attractive part of daily driving in urban areas. It offers you a safe, effortless drive in slow traffic," said Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President of R & D of at Volvo.
