The Volzhsky Automobilny Zavod is a Russian carmaker founded in 1966 in collaboration with Fiat. Originally, VAZ models were known as Zhiguli in Russia, and as Lada in the rest of the world. Lada cars were economic automobiles, in the line of the “people’s cars”. The first model was released in 1970 and was based on the Fiat 124. VAZ also produces non-Fiat models, the Riva being actually one of its most successful productions.
