The Volkswagen CC was first introduced in 2008 as Passat CC. The four-door coupé is based on the VW Passat model, hence its first generation was marketed explicitly as Passat CC. For the second generation, which was launched for the model year 2012, the German brand decided to distinguish the mid-size car from its relative by selling it as "CC" only. "CC" stands for "Comfort Coupé".
