Review

In 2010 Volkswagen premiered in Leipzig the second generation of its MPV, the Touran. After 1.13 million units of the first series were sold, the Touran appeared with an updated look, following Volkswagen’s “design DNA”.

Engines and transmissions

The 2010 Touran offers a range of eight engines. With an output between 90 PS and 170 PS all the eight engines follow the Volkswagen downsizing principle, offering less engine displacement, lower emissions, lower fuel consumption at more torque.

Petrol engines

The second Touran generation offers three different petrol engines. The entry-level is the 1.2 TSI, a turbocharged direct-injection engine with 105 PS. With a maximum torque of 175 Newton-metres it consumes 6.4 l/100 km fuel in the combined cycle, with 149 g/km of CO2 emissions. This engine is also available with BlueMotion Technology lowering combined fuel consumption and CO2 emissions to 5.9 l/100 km and 139 g/km, respectively. The two other petrol engines were adopted from the previous model. The two 1.4-litre TSI engines have power outputs of 140 PS and 170 PS.

Also in its second generation, the Touran continues offer a version powered by natural gas. The EcoFuel version in this generation consumes 4.7 kilograms of natural gas (CNG) per 100 kilometres in combined mode driving, which correspond to 128 g/km of CO2 emissions. When fitted with the optional seven-speed Direct Shift Gearbox fuel consumption is reduced to 4.6 kg/100 km and CO2 emissions to 125 g/km.

Diesel engines

As for the diesel engines, the Touran is available with four turbodiesels. Although they produce the same amount of power as the engines of the previous generation, the TDIs are completely new  with enhanced efficiency levels. The 1.6-litre four cylinder TDI is the entry-level engine of the quartet. It has an output of 90 PS, a combined cycle fuel consumption of 5.1 litres/100 km. The other 1.6-litre TDI engine had its power increased by 15 PS and is combined with a seven-speed DSG or in the BlueMotion Technology version with six-speed manual. With the BlueMotion Technology the Touran delivers a fuel economy value of 4.6 l/100 km.

The two 2.0-litres engines are the most powerful TDIs for this generation. With 140 PS and 170 PS of output, these engines have increased fuel saving up to 1.2 l/100 km. The 170 PS TDI has a standard six-speed DSG, while DSG is offered as an option on the 140 PS variant. The latter is also available with BlueMotion Technology.

Design

In terms of design the body of the Touran was almost completely restyled. This generation model had its bumper, radiator grille, engine bonnet, wings and headlights adapted to the Volkswagen “design DNA”. At the rear, the MPV’s lights are the main new feature. For the first time they have been designed in two-part modules, extending from the wing into the tailgate.
