The Volvo S40 is a compact executive 4-door luxury sedan that was launched in 1995. First named S4, its name had to be changed because Audi had already reserved the "S4" name.
The first generation S40 was built at the NedCar factory in the Netherlands as part of a joint venture between Volvo and Japanese car maker Mitsubishi Motors. Mitsubishi also produced a model using the same platform. It was named Carisma, but it didn't have the same success as the Volvo model.
