Introduced by Volvo in 1998, the Volvo S80 is a mid-size executive saloon that was developed as a successor of the rear-wheel drive Volvo 960/S90 saloons in  the Swedish brand's portfolio.

Unlike most Volvo models, it did not have a estate / station wagon version for its first generation. For the second generation of the S80 the third generation V70 wagon is marketed as its estate version. The Volvo S80 first generation was notable for being one of the first Volvos to depart from the company's traditionally very boxy, conservative styling.

As Volvo's flagship model, the S80 saloon was heavily equipped with numerous safety systems to ensure all occupants safety. Based on the Ford D3 platform the first generation S80 featured for five years one of the highest crash test ratings in the world.

In 2006 at the Geneva Motor Show, Volvo Cars unveiled the second generation of the S80.
