The Zastava Automobili DD foundation dates back to 1853 for gun production. Located in Kragujevac, on the right bank of the river Lepenica, Serbia, the company started producing military vehicles under American license during WW II. In 1955 Zastava extended its activities to passenger car building under Fiat’s license.
The factory was destroyed during the Kosovo war in 1999 but was rebuilt and is still operative as a joint venture between the Serbian Government and the Fiat Group. Zastava cars exported to the USA were sold under the name of Yugo.
