ZAZ or Zaporizhia Automobile Building Plant was founded by the Governement of the USSR in Zaporoshje, Ukraine, in 1960, under the name Zaporizkyi avtomobilnyi. The company’s goal was the production of small cars for the Russian market. The first cars, known as Zaporozhets, were a copy of the Fiat 600.
In 1998 the company was taken over by Korean Daewoo of Korea, which ended in 2003 when Hirsch & CIE bought Daewoo’s participation. ZAZ continued in the automotive industry producing cars, vans and buses.
