Zédel was founded by Ernest Zürcher and Herman Lüthi in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 1897, under the name Zürcher et Luthie & Cie. In 1901 the company changed the name to Zédel S.A. (Zédel is the French pronounciation of the initial letters of the founders' surnames: (Z)ürcher and (L)üthi.
Later on, part of the company was transferred to Pontarlier, France. In 1907 Ernest Zürcher sold his share in the company to Samuel Graf and in 1918 the company was taken over by Donnet and became known as Donnet-Zédel. The Great Depression made of Donnet-Zédel another victim: in 1928 the Pontarlier plant closed its doors.
