Zavod imeni Likhacheva was founded in Moscow, Russia, in 1916, under the name Avtomobilnoe Moskovskoe Obshchestvo (AMO). The first cars were only produced in 1924. In 1931 the company changed its name to Zavod Imeni Stalina (ZIS or ZiS). ZIS were luxury limousines used by Russian Officials and high ranking dignitaries. In 1956, the name was changed again to Zavod Imeni Likhacheva and the cars became known as ZIL's.
