Carlo Abarth founded his company on 15 April of 1949. The prominent race driver used his zodiac sign, the scorpion, as the brand’s logo. The carmaker started with 35 employees in Turin and specialized in modifying mass-production cars, particularly Fiats. This dynamic accelerated, when Fiat started to pay Abarth for its podium places in motorsport races.
The alliance went even further when Fiat decided to give Abarth a car body and asked them to complete the car by choosing brakes, carburetors, exhaust pipes, etc. Abarth had other partnerships with Porsche and Simca. In 1971, Fiat bought Abarth. The company remained virtually the same. Today, the Abarth badge is reserved for Fiat’s sports and high performance versions.
