Construction at the plant began 18 months ago near Audi’s factory in Neckarsulm. The 23-hectare factory will be completed in early 2014.

It will provide body manufacturing, logistics and assembly of the R8. It will be the first time that all of the manufacturing of Audi’s supercar will be done under one roof. The 250 employees who currently build the R8 will all move to the new factory to build the car.

The new building will also have a 325m-long, 115m-wide logistics center that will ship 5,000 containers of goods starting in early 2014.

“The new production facility is a key element for the future viability and competitiveness of the Audi site. The construction project provides the space necessary for high-volume production in Neckarsulm,” said Plant Manager Fred Schulze.

The new building will also collect rainwater for reuse and use solar energy to heat portions of it.
