Audi takes pole at Le Mans

Audi has taken the first step towards another overall win at Le Mans by taking the first and second positions overall in provisional qualifying yesterday. Peugeot was close behind taking the third and fourth positions. Its fastest car was only about .3 of a second off the pace of the fastest Audi. The Aston Martin LMP1 cars qualified poorly ending up in places 22 and 25 overall behind several LMP2 cars.

The fastest LMP2 was the Signatech Nissan, which qualified 14th overall. The Strakka Racing HPD Car qualified second in LMP2 but was about 1.2 seconds off the Nissan's pace.

The BMW Motorsport M3 GT was fastest in the GTE Pro class and the AF Corse Ferrari 458 was about half a second behind it in second.

AF Corse's Ferrari F430 led the GTE Amateur class and out-qualified several GTE Pro cars overall as well. The Proton Competition Porsche 911 RSR qualified second in class but was over two seconds off the pace of the Ferrari.

The 79th 24 Hours of Le Mans will begin tomorrow, Saturday, June 11, at 3pm GMT.
