As European emissions laws get more stringent, even luxury automakers are being forced to look for ways to build cleaner cars that maintain or improve performance.
Bentley engineer Rolf Frech told Autocar that Bentley is open to the idea of using plug-in hybrids in future models.
“Hybrids are appealing because of the great torque they provide. Bentley is famous for its huge low-end torque so a plug-in hybrid system would fit. Of course, hybrids provide great efficiency, too,” said Frech.
As automakers get more accustomed to the idea of working with hybrid powertrains and the technology improves, hybrids are becoming more viable as performance models. Lexus, BMW and Mercedes already offer hybrids in their largest luxury sedans.
