Bold Button takes victory in Australia

A solid performance and a brilliant strategy gave Jenson Button his first victory of the season and as a McLaren driver in Melbourne.

The rain that fell just before the start of the race handled a thrilling race with the British driver inheriting the lead of the race from Vettel after a brake failure sent him into the gravel and out of the race he had once again been controlling from the start.

Renault's Robert Kubica rise from ninth place to runner-up spot ahead of Ferrari's Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso and Mercedes' Nico Rosberg.

Liuzzi, Barrichelo and Webber occupied positions seven to nine as Michael Scumacher scored a single point with his tenth place after he had to change his front wing right and was trapped behind Toro Rosso's Alguersuari for many laps.

The first turn of the race was just an apetizer for what was to come. A contact between Alonso and Button sent the Ferrari spinning into Michael Schumacher's Mercedes, breaking its front wing. On turn 6 of the first lap Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi speared into the inside wall before crossing the track collecting both Sebastien Buemi's Toro Rosso and Nico Hulkenberg's Williams, with the safety making its first apperance of the season.

With Button clear in top position after the retirement from Vettel, the fight from second to sixth place continued until the last laps of the race. With eight laps to go Kubica, Massa, Alonso, Hamilton and Webber were nose to tail and fighting for the podium places, followed by Nico Rosberg.

Wit two laps to go Alonso was defending himself from Hamilton until Webber hit the back of the McLaren under braking, smashing the Red Bull's front wing and spinning Hamilton through the gravel. The British driver still managed to finish sixth, with Webber falling behind into ninth position.

As for the new teams, Lotus' Heikki Kovalainen drove his F1 to 13th spot with HRT's Chandhok giving the Spanish team reasons to celebrate after a difficult start in Bahrain.

In terms of championship standings, after two races Ferrari's Fernando Alonso remains in top position, followed by team mate Felipe Massa. With his victory this weekend Jenson Button climbed to third spot in standings.
