The Cadillac ATS will be out in just a few months to compete with the BMW 3-Series in the US. That is not stopping Cadillac from continuing to refine the car prior to its release. Now the team is working on the sound of the ATS.
Cadillac, despite tip-toeing towards a more sporty image, is still known as a luxury brand, and that means that the interior must be quiet. However, the ATS teams wants to give the car a vaguely aggressive demeanor. So it is ensuring that when drivers put their foot down, they can hear it in the cockpit.
The engineers have been fine tuning the intake system to minimize sound, and it has also worked to open up the exhaust to improve performance to quite drone to a minimum.
The car is going to come with an optional Active Sound Management System by Bose. It monitors sound inside the cabin and generates a cancellation signal to reduce engine noise. The system also means that the car can use less sound deadening to keep weight down.
“The ATS sounds distinctly like a Cadillac should. We’ve created a signature sound that expresses Cadillac power, refinement and luxury – and we make it sing,” said Kyle Stanforth, noise and vibration engineer at Cadillac.
