Dutch Roads Will Glow in the Dark As Soon As Next Year

The glow-in-the-dark road will be implemented next year

Dutch companies Studio Roosegaarde and Heijmans Infrastructure are responsible for the Netherlands' Smart Highways Project and will implement a first-of-its-kind upgrade to the country's roads - glow-in-the-dark road lines.

The glowing lines work because of specially mixed road paint that absorbs light during the day and glows up to 10 hours at night. The paint is also temperature-sensitive too meaning that when roads become icy, the road lines show a snowflake pattern.

“We are innovating the highway to make roads that are more sustainable and interactive," said a Studio Roosegaarde spokesperson.

The companies are also considering implementing motion sensitive highway lights that would illuminate only when care were on the highway, and far in the future, they want to implement electric car lanes with inductive charging embedded in the road that would charge the car while it is driving.
