started in Poland in 2007 and five years later Fiat has built its one-millionth unit of the retro-styled, sub-compact car. It began building the car in Mexico in 2011 for North America as well. The car went on sale officially in July 4, 2007. It sold 186,000 units in its first year.
The millionth car was a Lounge trim in Funky White with a 1.2-liter 69hp engine.
What set the 500 apart was that it is so customizable. Fiat offers the 500 in two body styles (hatchback and convertible), six trim levels (Pop, Pop Star, Colour Therapy, Lounge, Street and "By Gucci") and five engine versions (1.2 69hp, 900cc TwinAir Turbo 85hp, 1.4 16v 100hp, 1.2 69hp EasyPower and 1.3 MultiJet 16v 95hp), and that does not even count the Abarth versions. It also offered over 100 available accessories and a long list of special editions.
When introduced, the 500 was the only car in its class with seven standard airbags and was the first car at its size to win a 5-start EuroNCAP score. It came standard with ESP regardless of engine.
Fiat had no fear to introduce special versions of the car. The AbarthAbarth 500 (modern)Italy, 2007 > present59 versions
