At an event the night of April 3, just before the opening of the New York International Auto Show, Fisker unveiled its new, mid-sized, range-extended sedan - the Atlantic. The vehicle is still a prototype for now, but this is vehicle is meant for production and will look very similar to this concept. Fisker says that this is the vehicle that take it "from start-up automaker to mainstream American automaker."
Styling for the Atlantic is like a smaller Karma. However, the Atlantic has a glass-paneled roof with a criss-cross of beams that offer structural support. Fisker claims that this layout gives the car sufficient rear headroom and safety in case of a roll-over, while still looking stylish and attractive. To further carry the coupe-sedan hybrid, the handles for the rear doors are integrated into the C-pillars. Despite looking like a single piece, the tail lights are actually two strips of LEDs that separate when the truck is opened.
When it is released, the Atlantic will use a range-extended hybrid layout similar to the Chevrolet Volt that uses a four-cylinder engine as a generator to charge the batteries. Buyers will be able to plug in the Atlantic to charge its lithium-ion batteries as well. The engine is the BMW 2.0l, turbocharged engine used in the current 3-series.
Fisker says that the Atlantic is roughly the same size as an Audi A5, and it will compete with similar vehicles in terms of performance. The standard car will be rear-wheel drive, but an all-wheel drive version will come later.
“We are exceptionally proud of the Atlantic design prototype, and believe we have created another groundbreaking car that looks and will drive like nothing else on the road in this class,” said Henrik Fisker, Executive Chairman and Design Director of Fisker Automotive.
Fisker has not annouced power specifications or price yet for the Atlantic and said that information would be available closer to release.
