Ford and Citroën have chosen completely opposite strategies on road position for the Rally Portugal that begins March 29. Citroën has opted to take the first two positions to start the rally; whereas Ford has selected the last two positions.
Ford drivers Jari-Matti Latvala and Petter Solberg were the fastest cars during practice, which allows them to be the first to select their starting position. Latvala will start 17th, and Solberg will start 16th.
Citroën drivers Mikko Hirvonen and Sebastien Loeb were the next fastest cars but selected the opposite starting position. Hirvonen will be first, and Loeb will be second on the road.
Hirvonen said that he and Loeb want to avoid dust on the road. The disadvantage to starting first and second is that the road will not be as clean, and it could slow them down.
"The organisers have told us there will be no dust in the stages tomorrow night and that's why we have made our decision," said Latvala.
If Ford is right, and there is little dust in the air, then the team will have the advantage of having a clean road.
